Matthew Broderick: From Here To Infinity
Past News

Dec 23, 2004 from IMDb:
Uma Thurman will take Nicole Kidman's place in the forthcoming movie version of The Producers. Kidman was forced to pull out of the role of busty Swedish secretary Ulla in the film - which is due to begin shooting in February - because of scheduling difficulties and her injured knee. South African beauty Charlize Theron was reportedly considered for the role, but producers have opted for fellow blonde Thurman, according to PageSix.Com. Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick will reprise the roles they took to great critical acclaim in the Broadway, New York stage version of Mel Brooks' tale of crooked theatre producers Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom.

Dec 10, 2004 from Contactmusic.com:
Actress Sarah Jessica Parker is trying to introduce her baby son James Wilke to one of her family traditions - playing with cardboard cylinders over the Christmas holidays. The former Sex and the City star, married to actor Matthew Broderick, recalls many happy holidays playing with the low-cost toys when she was growing up with her seven siblings in Ohio.

She says, "When I was growing up, my parents used to leave the cardboard cylinders that held the wrapping paper - we called them 'doo-dee-doos' - under the tree to convince us that Santa (Claus) has been there. We've been doing that for our son, James Wilke - he really doesn't care. But he will. He knows about Santa Claus - he called him Santy. He knows he's coming this month."

Dec 2, 2004 from New York Post:
Every day is Christmas when you're a big star, with all that free gear all the time. Here, celebs reveal the best graft they've ever gotten:

Matthew Broderick: mini iPod - "Since my wife's (Sarah Jessica Parker) success on "Sex and the City," she gets all kinds of free things. Recently, she got one of those mini iPods and I took it from her. It's pink, which is not exactly the color I'd choose, but I still really enjoy it."

Sarah Jessica Parker: free spa day - "I was given a day of beauty at a first-class spa where I was pampered with a great manicure, pedicure, facial. The works! It was so relaxing and so much fun."

It was Kevin Geer, one of The Foreigner's original cast, who suggested to Todd Haimes, artistic director of Manhattan's Roundabout Theatre that Matthew Broderick might be interested in playing Charlie in the Off-Broadway revival. Twenty years ago, Broderick stopped Geer on the street to tell him how much he loved "The Foreigner."

from Vogue:
Sarah Jessica Parker is about to realise yet another of her fashion dreams. The super-stylish mother-of-one has been working on the creation of her own scent, which is something she admits she has wanted to do since she was a child. So far details of the project are top secret, but her husband Matthew Broderick is all for it. "She's working on a perfume which she's been enjoying," he said. "She's picking scents and things. They give her all these potions and she loves it, and shapes for bottles, which I believe is going to be in the egg family. She really knows how to pick perfumes. She smells great."

Nov 17, 2004 from Playbill:
The long-talked-about Broadway revival of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple, starring the golden duo of Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, is now aiming at a Broadway opening in August 2005.

Joe Mantello would direct the production, which would reunite the stars of The Producers. The venture would likely be a limited run. Emanuel Azenberg, the veteran showman long associated with Simon, will be lead producer. "We are amicably negotiating with Nathan and Matthew and Joe Mantello," Azenberg told Playbill On-Line. No theatre has been mentioned for the mounting.

Nov 10, 2004 from Newsday:
By Liz Smith - Until Jan. 16, you can see Matthew Broderick doing his sweet, nerdy and incredibly informed stuff in the Roundabout Theatre's pleasantly silly but rather stagy production of Larry Shue's "The Foreigner." That you'll stay in your seat until the end of this drawn-out farce is all thanks to Matthew and his co-star, the venerable, Tony winner Frances Sternhagen. They could easily cut a half hour of this play, which takes forever to flap its wings and get off the ground. But Broderick is worth it. Nobody does what he does onstage. He is the guy who literally "made" "The Producers" for me. Just a formidably gifted actor!

Nov 7, 2004 from New York Daily News:
Matthew Broderick - who plays a stiff Englishman on holiday in "The Foreigner," which opened last night Off-Broadway - shares his wisdom about women with the December Elle.

Broderick confides that he once got some heavy advice from loverboy Marlon Brando. "He gave me one tip," he says. "He was talking about a woman nearby and he said, 'Look at that a--.' He just loved it. And I said, 'You don't think it's a little big?' And he said, 'No, that's what you want. You want that abundancy.' I remember he used that word."

Broderick's dad, the late movie star James Broderick, also offered him counsel. "My father and I were out once when I was in my teens, and he got some black licorice for my mom," Broderick says. "He told me it's good to get little presents. It doesn't matter what, but it shows a woman you're thinking about her."

When asked about his childhood crushes - long before he met wife Sarah Jessica Parker - Broderick makes a strange admission. "I liked the Bionic Woman. I was impressed that she could hear so well," he says. "When I was very little I had a crush on the street urchin from 'Modern Times,' Paulette Goddard," Broderick adds. "She's so beautiful when she's scrounging for food by the docks."

Filming for The Producers has been delayed due to actor Nathan Lane replacing Richard Dreyfuss in the London production of the Tony Award-winning musical. Although the movie crew is set to open production offices at Brooklyn, N.Y.,'s Steiner Studios, no filming will occur until Lane returns to the United States. Lane reportedly will fill in for Dreyfuss until mid-January.

Oct 29, 2004 from Playbill:
Twelve Angry Men opening night Twelve Angry Men turned 50, en masse, Sept. 20, and the Roundabout Theatre Company marked the spot—albeit, belatedly on Oct. 28—with a double-barrel birthday bash: a live reenactment at American Airlines Theatre and a jubilant party wind-down at China Club. It being a feast for character actors, you can imagine others of those hearty breed were in attendance. Some bolted from rehearsals—Dana Ivey from The Rivals, Kate Reinders from Good Vibrations, Amy Irving from Celadine, the new Charles Evered play bowing at the George Street Playhouse with Michael Countryman. Late arriving from their previews: Frank Wood and J. Smith Cameron from God of Hell, Matthew Broderick from The Foreigner. Also in attendance: Simon Jones, Tom Toner, Theoni V. Aldredge, John Slattery, Ed Harris, Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson, Louis Zorich, Tony Roberts, Kate Burton and playwrights Kenneth Lonergan and Paula Vogel. (Photo by Aubrey Reuben)

Oct 25, 2004 from Variety:
By Army Archerd - It's a good morning back in Hollywood after a week's newsgathering in N.Y. We caught up with Matthew Broderick, Frances Sternhagen and "The Foreigner" company in previews at the Laura Pels Roundabout Theater and can thank them for feasting us with the brief stand as Broderick gets ready to start the film version of "The Producers" early next year. "The Foreigner" is an even greater tour de force for Broderick. Talking with him in his dressing room about the upcoming "Producers" film version, he said Mel Brooks warned him and Nathan Lane that their dialog had to be shortened -- after all the movie can't run as long as the play. (Mel's in London where he's viewing Nathan Lane take over for Richard Dreyfuss). Broderick told me it will be convenient filming "The Producers" at the new Brooklyn Navy Yard studio. "We live near the bridge," he enthused. Would you believe that, after winding Sunday's matinee performance, Matthew and wife Sarah Jessica Parker joined Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld in a helicopter flight to Atlantic City where they surprised Don Rickles on stage at the Resorts. It was the first time Broderick had seen Rickles on stage. Of course, Rickles had a ball with this quartet out front. They later dined together at Resorts' Camelot restaurant, and the quartet 'coptered back to N.Y. same night.

Oct 4, 2004 from New York Daily News:
Sarah Jessica Parker leads a life quite the opposite of her former "Sex and the City" alter ego, Carrie Bradshaw.

"How many times have you seen me out?" she asked us Thursday. "You haven't, because I'm not. You never see me at premieres. I don't go to parties. I am home all the time. I have certain things I made professional commitments to [go to], but everyone seems to think my husband [Matthew Broderick] is home and I'm out, but it's so not true."

So what dragged the new mother from her cozy West Village abode up to Vera Wang's fabulous Park Ave. apartment on a weeknight? "Get Organized New York," the huge New York City tag sale set for Oct. 16-17 in Central Park that will benefit the city's public schools.

"This I'm really excited about, so every now and then it's nice to put makeup on and borrow clothes. I want the school system to be as good as it can be," said Parker, who joined Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, Jessica Seinfeld, Katie Couric, Marisa Tomei and Pepe Fanjul at the fete.

from New York Times:
By Joyce Wadler - On the red carpet at the premiere of "The Last Shot," Sarah Jessica Parker told us that their son's first words were "taxi" and "shoe."

Later, at the after-party, we sat down with Matthew Broderick. In "Last Shot" his character wonders what it would be like to be interviewed on the red carpet. How does Mr. Broderick find the experience? "It's still a little bit exciting," Mr. Broderick said, "but as you do it more, you get defensive. I'm a little bit frightened that somebody has some strange motive - "

"Paranoia sets in as you age. But it's still very exciting," Mr. Broderick said, trying to cultivate some enthusiasm. "A premiere is always an exciting thing; it sort of always is. I sound like Judy Garland." Well, thank you for your time. "I can't think of any jokes," Mr. Broderick apologized. "Thank you."

Jul 29, 2004 from Playbill:
Since first reported by the New York Post in January 2004, the prospect of a Broadway revival of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple has been dangled like a carrot before a thirsty theatregoing public (not to mention a salivating theatre press).

Six months later, the production is still a possibility, but one without any definite timetable or creative team. NathanLane and Matthew Broderick have said in interviews that they intend to do the play, and producer Emanuel Azenberg and playwright Simon have expressed their interest. Still, no theatre has been booked, no director hired.

Though the enterprise was first announced for spring 2005, a spokesman for Simon said the 2005-06 season was a more realistic goal. The reason? Both Lane and Broderick have been cast in the film version of The Producers, which begins shooting in February 2005.

Lane and Broderick would play Oscar Madison and Felix Unger in Simon's classic The Odd Couple. Lane would be the sloppy sportswriter Madison, while Broderick would be the uptight photographer Felix Unger (the twosome might also switch roles at some performances).

"The Frogs" cast met the press in the little anteroom off the entrance of Tavern—and interviews were conducted hastily there so the actors could enjoy their well-earned meals. Nathan Lane lighted at the Roger Bart table, relinquishing his own to friends and family. At his left was his Producers pal, Matthew Broderick (sans son and wife, whom he said he was joining the following day in the Hamptons). "I certainly laughed a lot," Broderick said, wickedly postscripting a mock understatement: "That guy Lane shows potential."

The two of them, along with Bart, will reconvene in March for the movie version of The Producers, which Stroman will direct and choreograph. Broderick expects to spend some quality time with his family until then. The Frogs will keep Lane hopping at least until October and maybe longer if it proves to be the Grecian earner that Lincoln Center Theatre hopes it to be. Stroman will next put Richard Dreyfuss into the London version of The Producers and then get busy on that movie. She says she's "thinking big—like Singin' in the Rain and The Band Wagon." One bit of business will have Broderick dancing on the ceiling a la Fred Astaire.

from SCI FI Wire:
Matthew Broderick, who stars in the upcoming remake of The Stepford Wives, admitted to SCI FI Wire that tempers sometimes flared on the set of the SF movie, a satiric take on Ira Levin's novel and the original 1975 film. But Broderick added that he did not witness the reported battles between director Frank Oz and co-stars Bette Midler, Nicole Kidman and Christopher Walken. "I didn't notice," Broderick said. "I honestly wasn't there. I know there were some moments of disagreement, but I really wasn't there."

The New York Times on June 6 reported that the production "was plagued by contention between Mr. Oz and the actors." But, Broderick added, "I wasn't there in the scenes that [the fights] would have happened in. Everybody who has been in this business for a long time [knows] you can't do a movie and not have a disagreement every now and then. Comparing it to other movies, I would say this was rather on the low end of tension. Most of the time I found that everybody got along very, very well." The Stepford Wives opens June 11.

from San Francisco Chronicle:
At the 58th annual Tony awards ceremony Sunday night, in his bravura "Boy From Oz" number, host Hugh Jackman entered on a camel, lolled on a piano, ground his hips in a gold-and-leopard outfit and teased "Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker about her bicoastal husband, Matthew Broderick. Parker, hauled onstage by Jackman, fretted about her sleeveless dress top as she declined to dance with Jackman. It was all scripted, but still one of the sparkiest moments in recent Tony telecasts.

from Cinema Confidential:
By Thomas Chau - Nicole Kidman's leading man in "The Stepford Wives" is Matthew Broderick, who is known to have a unique comedic style to his methods. Broderick’s role was originally going to have John Cusack starring in it but Cusack dropped out after a family sickness. Kidman, however, couldn’t have been more pleasd to work with Broderick. I asked Nicole what she thought of working with Broderick, to which she replied, “It was lovely working with him. He really is a sweetheart and he’s very, very talented and patient and generous to all of us. He had a lot of women around him on the set!”

While talking to us about "The Stepford Wives," Kidman also dropped in the story about how she joined "The Producers" movie. "Yeah, that’s actually how we stumbled across ‘The Producers’ movie. Matthew said, ‘Mel Brooks wants to call you but you probably won’t be interested.’ I was like, ‘Are you kidding?’ And he said, ‘Well you’re just saying that,” and I said, “I never do that. Yeah, I’ll do ‘The Producers’ with you.’ So it was that simple and that’s how that came about," Kidman reveals.

Kidman will play the role of Ulla in the movie. "My role is a much smaller role. Matthew and Nathan, it’s their big thing." She also reveals that she will be doing some dancing, in addition to some singing, for the part.

When it comes to Broadway, the more extravagant the dressing room, the bigger the star. Tony-nominated star Hugh Jackman's dressing room at the Imperial Theatre is equipped with a flat-screen TV, cashmere and velvet couches and cases of Australian wine. Matthew Broderick required a treadmill when he was starring in "The Producers." And Harvey Fierstein had a pink dressing room (with a separate waiting room), where the entire "Hairspray" cast would hang out during rehearsals.

Jun 4, 2004 from Reuters:
NEW YORK - Rail-thin Nicole Kidman will need a little help making the transformation to a buxom Swedish secretary for her next role with Matthew Broderick, in the film version of Mel Brooks' stage hit "The Producers."

"Mel says we'll pad her," said Broderick. "I think we should pad her, I guess." Broderick also stars with Kidman in the updated, dark-comedy version of "Stepford Wives," a film he was promoting on Thursday in advance of its opening next week.

Kidman's slim, fashion-model frame is shown to advantage in her "Stepford Wives" role as Broderick's wife. For "The Producers," she will be play statuesque Swedish secretary Ulla, whose bountiful bosom inspires numerous jokes in the Brooks farce. Broderick will be reprising his role as meek accountant Leo Bloom in "The Producers," opposite Nathan Lane, who created the stage role of devious Broadway producer Max Bialystock.

"She could look like a Swede. She's psychotically tall, which I think will be good. I think it's a good part for her. I can't wait. I think she'll be great," Broderick said.

Kidman said Broderick helped bring her into the project during their work together on the "Stepford" movie. The new Brooks film is set to begin shooting in February. Physical augmentation for a film role would not be entirely new for Kidman, who had a prosthetic nose put on her face for the 2002 movie "The Hours." The Australian beauty won an best-actress Oscar for her portrayal of writer Virginia Woolf in that film.

They talked about what it was like working on the remake of The Stepford Wives film, and discuss the relevance of the cult classic to their lives today. The interview airs on Friday night, May 28 ,2004. (Photo by AP/ABC)

from ExtraTV:
Correspondent Deborah Roberts, who talked with the stars of "The Stepford Wives" for "20/20," told "Extra" about the interview. "I did ask Nicole Kidman about parallels between her character in the film, who is this very high powered network executive, and being intimidating to men, wondering whether or not she may be doing the same thing in her personal life," Roberts revealed, noting that Nicole is, "Clearly aware that she's a powerful woman, and that there aren't a lot of men who can handle that."

The Stepford stars reveal their lives and marriages are far from perfect, but there's no doubt that Kidman and Matthew Broderick make a perfect Stepford Couple. When asked if the film's theme is still relevant today, Broderick responds, "Well, I would imagine it is. I mean -- " before Nicole cuts him off, prompting Matthew to joke: "This is why we want to turn them into robots, because they speak for us!"

"'Is this what you really want?'" Nicole says her character asks her husband in the movie. "'Women who behave like slaves, women who exist only to wait on you hand and foot?' And he says, ‘yes.' And a lot of men say that!"

New on DVD: "Frasier: Season Three" (Paramount, unrated, $49.99) — Television comedy simply doesn’t get much better than this. The just-retired, much-lauded show was at the peak of its powers in its third season — Niles was about to leave the invisible Maris, Mercedes Reuhl was brought in as the tough new station manager, and Frasier was in full sensitive windbag mode. Extras include a spotlight on celebrity voices — Matthew Broderick, Teri Garr, Carrie Fisher — who called into Frasier’s talk show, interviews with Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde-Pierce about the season and more. In 20 years, this stuff will still be laugh-aloud funny. GRADE: A

May 21, 2004 from Arizona Daily Star:
Mel Brooks loved the experience of writing the musical so much, that he's tackling another: "Young Frankenstein," an adaptation of his 1974 movie of the same title. It will hit Broadway in 2006, about the same time that "The Producers" will be released on film, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick reprising the Broadway roles of Bialystock and Bloom, respectively, and Nicole Kidman as Ulla, the Swedish bombshell.

On New Year's Eve 2003, when Lane and Broderick returned to the Broadway production of "The Producers" for a four-month stint, Brooks donned a judge's robe for the courtroom scene. "I surprised them," he said, glee lacing his trademark gravelly voice. "Nathan nearly fainted. He had no idea. I banged the gavel and said, 'There will be no ad-libbing in this courtroom; I know the writer.' It was a great night."

It all began ten years ago, on Stage 24 of the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank, California. On that first night, 21.5 million viewers tuned in to the premiere episode of "Friends." Thursday night, 45 million viewers are expected to watch it all end. Lots of famous fans are having a tough time saying goodbye. When we spoke to Alec Baldwin, who had a memorable "Friends" appearance, he told us, "It is such a good show. They are such a uniquely gifted cast. Good luck; you guys will have great careers." Matthew Broderick is also a huge fan of the show, and added, "It's so wonderful. I will really miss it. Just great story arcs."

Weeks after The Stepford Wives remake was test-screened, its crew and power cast - Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler, Matthew Broderick, and Christopher Walken - are headed back for "additional scenes," as the studio calls them. The latest turmoil for the June 11 film comes after the $90 million Frank Oz-directed pic ran two months behind schedule. Oz, the voice of Yoda and Miss Piggy (top that on your resume!), wants Kidman for three days of reshoots, though she's working on Sydney Pollack's The Interpreter in her native Australia. "Frank's sense of detail can just be insane," says one set spy. "He's used to puppets." Aren't we all?

Ann Leary, wife of Denis Leary, has written a book, "An Innocent, A Broad," about the premature birth of their son, and so the Learys' Connecticut neighbors, Liz and Kelly Martin, had a book party at their New York apartment - a fancy Upper East Side duplex with a library and huge dining room.

....We ended up talking to a host of the party, Peter Gallagher. Mr. Gallagher was telling us about "The O.C.'' when the conversation was interrupted by Thomas McCarthy, director of "The Station Agent," who was on his way out. "I just lost an apartment today," said Mr. McCarthy. "It turned into a bidding war, and it went up and up. By the time it was over, it was up $100,000. It was not even that great." Mr. Gallagher turned to us, "You do realize this guy made $30 million with 'The Station Agent?' "

"You know what I did buy with $30 million? A Vespa," Mr. McCarthy said. "You know who really talked me into getting one is Broderick. He has a couple." And what did Matthew Broderick say? "That they're just a great way to get around the city. Though this is the first time I've ever come up this far. I live downtown."

Apr 11, 2004 from The Herald-Dispatch:
Mel Brooks had a novel idea for the screenplay for the 2005 movie version of "The Producers". He would toss the scripts of the current Broadway hit and the 1968 film on which it was based into a laundry bag. "I'd shake the bag, and whatever comes out first, that's the movie," he says. But seriously, Brooks is already at work on the screenplay with Thomas Meehan, co-writer of the musical.

The "iron-core cast" includes Broadway cast members Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and Gary Beach, plus Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. Brooks says the film will have a limited release next Christmas, going nationwide around Presidents Day (Feb. 21).

Playboy magazine asked the man who played Chandler for a decade how he would re-cast the sitcom for the silver screen. “I think the idea of recasting ‘Friends’ is absolutely insane,” Perry responded in an issue that hits stands tomorrow. “That said, I think Matthew Broderick would be fine as Chandler.”

Apr 5, 2004 from New York Daily News:
The original Bialystock & Bloom said bye-bye to Broadway yesterday. Fans gave a rousing sendoff to Nathan Lane (Max Bialystock) and Matthew Broderick (Leo Bloom) as the two triumphantly capped their return engagement to the St. James Theater in "The Producers." After a 20-minute standing ovation, Lane thanked everyone from fellow cast members to the orchestra to the stagehands - and reminded the audience that the show will go on.

From its debut in April 2001 until Lane and Broderick left in March 2002, the Mel Brooks show was a perpetual sellout - despite record ticket prices. Sales lagged before the two actors returned late last year as the highest-paid actors in Broadway history. Once again, seats were hard to come by for the show that won a record 12 Tony Awards in June 2001, including Lane as Best Leading Actor in a Musical.

Two other original cast members, Brad Oscar (Franz Liebkind) and Roger Bart (Carmen Ghia), take over the lead roles beginning tomorrow. But for those who can't get enough of the dynamic duo, Lane and Broderick are set to star in the film version of "The Producers," expected to hit the big screen in 2005.

It's set for release in December 2005.

Mar 15, 2004 from Hollywood Reporter:
LOS ANGELES - Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker aren't afraid of "Strangers With Candy." The couple have agreed to star in a feature film based on Comedy Central's short-lived satire of moralistic afterschool specials, their respective reps have confirmed.

Their attachment comes as a result of a friendship with Amy Sedaris, the co-creator and star of the cult series. Sedaris previously teamed with Parker on "Sex and the City," playing Carrie Bradshaw's editor. There is no formal deal for Broderick and Parker, and it is still unclear what characters they will be playing. Filming is set to start in June in New York City. A director will be announced shortly.

The show starred Sedaris alongside fellow co-creators Paul Dinello and Stephen Colbert and aired for three seasons on Comedy Central beginning in 1999. Sedaris plays a frumpy and unattractive outcast who returned to high school after 30 years of hard living on the streets and in prison. However, the rough times don't end at school as, while trying to shed her immoral past, she's forced to mix and mingle with kids who are hipper, more beautiful and more popular than she is.

"We always think in terms of casting when we're writing the show," Mel Brooks said "For 'Young Frankenstein,' we hope we can get Matthew Broderick for the young doctor. It would show all sides of his character. "And the show is inherently musical, because the Monster is transformed by music! It takes his soul. And that's how they get him back. They lure him back with music. Nothing but music can get him back."

Mar 2, 2004 from People:
Sarah Jessica Parker and hubby Matthew Broderick's son is 16 months old, but they still differ on what they call him. "We're not totally settled on that," Broderick tells us. "Usually (Sarah) calls him James Wilkie. Sometimes it's James. Sometimes it's Jimmy." But the tot, whose middle name is in honor of writer Wilkie Collins, is certain about at least one thing: "He likes the Wiggles – these Australian guys who wear Star Trek uniforms and sing and walk around in a computer world," says Broderick. "It's a TV show. And he loves it."

Speaking of Sarah Jessica's son, he has picked up at least one habit from Cynthia Nixon's 16-month-old, Charlie. "My baby is a real thumb-sucker," admits Nixon, "and James wasn't so much at the beginning. And they were playing one day when they were little. Charlie was sucking his thumb and James was kind of fascinated. So he pulled Charlie's thumb out of his mouth and put it in his own mouth. And Sarah said after that James realized, 'Wow, this is an option.' "

No pair of stage performers in the last decade has generated the buzz -- or boxoffice -- of Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in "The Producers." Both appeared recently in a forum sponsored by The New York Times, which the paper's John Darnton invited "Radio Playbill" to broadcast. Highlights can be heard on the show airing March 1-14. The stars talk about what it's like to be back in Mel Brooks' musical comedy and about plans to make it back into a movie. Lane also tells what it's like to work -- as both star and librettist -- with Stephen Sondheim on his upcoming Broadway project, "The Frogs."

Feb 27, 2004 from E! Online:
Springtime's come and gone again for Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. The duo, in the midst of a sold-out, box-office-bursting encore run as Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom respectively in Mel Brooks' "The Producers," will not be extending their Broadway tour of duty past April 4. Producers of "The Producers" on Friday put an end to speculation that the pair might continue past that date. "They're definitely leaving," said show rep Bill Coyle.

Last week, "The Producers" hauled in $1.3 million, the biggest gross along the Great White Way. The first week of their encore run alone, which included a high-priced New Year's Eve performance, topped all competitors, grossing a record $1.6 million.

Before a new "Producers" film can start rolling, both stars have a full slate ahead of them. This year alone, Broderick will release three movies--Paramount's upcoming remake of "The Stepford Wives" with Nicole Kidman due in June, and Sundance fave "Marie and Bruce" and Disney's "The Last Shot" both slated for the fall.

"No, that's all right," he said bravely, dragging himself up the stairs by the railing to join a table of "Producers" cast members as Mr. McIndoe watched.

Was something wrong? Had he hurt himself? Mr. McIndoe shook his head. "No, it's a bit, and I laugh every time," he said pleasantly. "The same thing with Nathan. We sent his dinner to his dressing room tonight between shows and if I called him now and asked, 'How was your dinner,' he'd say, 'Surprisingly good,' which is what he says every time." Mr. McIndoe smiled comfortably. "I know my place," he said. (Photo by Christopher Smith)

Jan 28, 2004 from The Mirror:
Last October, Sarah Jessica Parker gave birth to her first son, James Wilke Broderick, with actor husband Matthew Broderick and the penultimate series had to be cut short by five episodes in order to fit in around her pregnancy. She admits going back to work after the birth was tough. "I felt conflicted about whether I would be able to be all things to all people," she says. "Am I being a good mother? Is he with me enough? Is my mind on my work enough?

"I'm used to feeling really focused about my job and I love that feeling and now I feel a different, wonderful burden. "His needs are simply more important. I try to make sure my son is on the set and sees me and knows me and loves me. But I don't think there's enough time. Days will pass and I haven't even had a chance to have a shower, like on weekends. "I'm with him a lot - all weekend long. I don't have any nannies on the weekend. It's just me and my husband and my son, and we do our best and he seems pretty well and healthy and happy. He's a great baby."

She is still close to her family, particularly her siblings. It was through her older brother Toby, also an actor, that she met her husband. "He's lethally charming," she enthuses about Broderick. "He's what I always wanted. You know, this kind of Jewish intellectual and the funniest person I'd ever met. "Dry as a bone. He's not demonstrative, and I find that really appealing - not in the way that girls like boys who treat them badly, but in a real, all-gestures-have-deep-meaning way. He's a substantial person."

There were rumours at one stage that she and Matthew who married in May 1997 were having problems but Sarah dismisses them. "I believe in being married only once, and it doesn't take a genius to understand it takes lots of romance and lots of lovin' to keep a marriage going. I have always enjoyed being a sexy wife. It's fun." The couple thought about being parents straight away but because of their busy lifestyles, it took six years. Now they can't wait to have more. "I'd give up work any minute for children," she says. "I see myself as a mother. I always have. I want to have three kids. Mia Farrow told me you have to - and my career will always be secondary to my kids.

If baby James ever showed an interest in pursuing acting, Sarah's not sure she would encourage him. "Someone will think I'm being very hypocritical as I started out as a child actress. I was on Broadway at the age of 11, but I wouldn't allow my child to work until he finished high school." The couple have just sold their 1840s townhouse in the trendy Greenwich area of New York and moved to a larger West Village home. No one needs to ask why. "I've had The Boy, so I can't wait to have The Girl - as soon as possible," she laughs. "I've been saving all my things for her, everything - crazy Judith Lieber handbags, Manolos - every single pair."

Jan 13, 2004 from PageSix:
Feb. 22 is the day Sarah Jessica Parker and her co-stars will finally say goodbye. Parker first thought about ending "Sex and the City" nearly two years ago. "It was soon after I got pregnant that I seriously started thinking about the future of Carrie," says Parker, who gave birth to her son, James, in October 2002. "One day, I woke up and realized that we should quit the show. I thought we should walk away while we were at the top. 'Sex and the City' is comfortable, lucrative, thrilling and extremely satisfying, but I know deep in my heart that this is the time to pull the plug," she says. "We have to do new things."

Parker's decision even surprised her husband, "Producers" star Matthew Broderick. "Matthew told me, 'Most stars in hit TV series usually get pushed out.' So me making my own choice is very daring." But after six years in a role that redefined her career, Parker wants to stretch her wings as an actress. "When I was pregnant, I started thinking I must play something very different now," she says.

That's a joke, son!: Bantering backstage during The New York Times' Arts & Leisure Weekend at the City University of New York Graduate Center, "Producers" stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick got to talking about 1-year-old James Broderick, whose mother is Sarah Jessica Parker. "He has started singing," the proud father reported. "He likes 'Bah Bah Black Sheep' and 'The Sound of Music.'" Lane asked: "You only play him show tunes?" Broderick replied: "No. We play him Springsteen and other things. He just seems to have gravitated to 'The Sound of Music.'" Not missing a beat, Lane announced: "Mary Martin! That's it. He's gay!" (Martin was the star of the original Broadway production.)

The New York Post reports that Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick have been offered the roles of Oscar Madison and Felix Unger in Neil Simon's classic "The Odd Couple." Lane would play the sloppy sportswriter Madison, while Broderick would be the uptight photographer Felix Unger (the twosome might also switch roles at some performances). The limited engagement will open on Broadway in spring 2005. Neither actor has yet to accept the offer, and a director has not been named.

from IMDb:
A spokesman for Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane has confirmed a Daily Variety report that the two stars of the Broadway version of "The Producers" will star in a new movie adaptation that will go before the cameras January next year. Simon Halls, the spokesman for Lane and Broderick, told today's New York Times that the film will be shot in New York, with Mel Brooks producing and writing the screenplay with Thomas Meehan. Halls also indicated that the movie will be directed by Susan Stroman, who directed the stage version. "They are very excited," Halls said in a telephone interview from his California office. "These are roles of a lifetime." "Nathan and Matthew have unmatched chemistry," Halls said. "So a lot of super-duo plays have been bandied about for them including `The Odd Couple' and `La Cage aux folles' but at this point they are going to do `The Producers' until April, then go off to do their own thing and then come back and do the movie."

Jan 6, 2004 from New York Daily News:
Those Broadway con men Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom are coming to the screen - again. Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick have signed "mid-to-high seven figure" deals to remake a musical version of "The Producers," the 1968 film that inspired the stage show. The original movie, which was not a musical, starred Zero Mostel as Bialystock and Gene Wilder as Bloom.

Universal Pictures confirmed the deal yesterday, saying it hoped for a release date late next year, reports Daily Variety. We don't know whether the movie will include the little dig at Rosie O'Donnell that Lane has added since reprising his role at the St. James Theatre. In the latest production, Bialystock advises Bloom never to invest his own money in a production, saying, "It's taboo. 'Taboo' - get it?"

O'Donnell, who sank $10 million of her own into the troubled Broadway production of "Taboo," starring Boy George, isn't taking umbrage. She told us: "Nathan is one of the funniest guys I've ever met in my entire life."

Jan 5, 2004 from Yahoo! News:
NEW YORK (AP) - With Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick back in the show, "The Producers" grossed a record $1,600,243 for eight performances last week, spokesman John Barlow said Monday. Barlow said the figure was boosted by premium $480 orchestra tickets and a special $600 ticket price for New Year's Eve.

"They sold a lot of them," Barlow added, referring to the $600 tickets. "I think that's part of why the gross was so high." Initially, the show's producers had planned to sell New Year's Eve tickets for $1,500, a deal which was to have included a post-performance dinner. That event was canceled after only a few tickets were sold.
