Matthew Broderick: From Here To Infinity
Past News

Dec 31, 2003 from AP:
NEW YORK - It's springtime for Broadway once more: Nathan and Matthew are back together again. To roars of approval, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, the original stars of "The Producers," returned Tuesday night to the Mel Brooks musical at Broadway's St. James Theatre.

As soon as Lane, who plays charlatan producer Max Bialystock in the show, stepped out on stage, theatergoers started cheering. Moments later, they did the same for Broderick, who portrays Leopold Bloom, Bialystock's nebbish accomplice.

Both stars appeared relaxed and expansive, embellishing their performances with new bits of vocal and physical business. Lane got one of the biggest laughs of the evening when he warned the neophyte Bloom, "Never put your own money in a show. That's taboo." It was an inside-theater reference to the $10 million and more Rosie O'Donnell has put up as producer of the Boy George musical "Taboo."

When Broderick dropped his cane during the show's finale, Lane affectionately patted him on the cheek as the theatergoers lustily applauded. The sold-out audience seemed determined to have a good time — and did.

With Lane and Broderick once again in the show, "The Producers" has returned to tough-ticket status, with the musical basically sold out the entire length of their engagement, through April 4. Yet there are still some $480 tickets available, according to Richard Frankel, one of the musical's producers. About 150 tickets are being set aside for each performance to be sold at that price through Broadway Inner Circle, a premium ticket service, Frankel said Tuesday. And, of course, tickets are on sale for after Lane and Broderick leave in April. No word yet on their replacements.

from New York Daily News:
Starting tonight and running through April 4, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick are reprising their roles in "The Producers." "It was such an exciting thing to do [the first time]," Broderick said yesterday on the "Today" show, "that it would be a shame not to ever do it again."

Except for special $480 "Inner Circle" seats still available for most performances, the show is sold out for the 14-week reprise of Lane and Broderick. On "Today," Lane jokingly referred to those high-priced tickets, saying the producers of "The Producers" had "come down with mad cash-cow disease." Starting next Tuesday, the show will stage a lottery each day for fans standing on line at 6 p.m. Seven winners will be offered two tickets to that night's show for $100 apiece. Eighteen standing-room tickets are also available about the same time each night - $25 each on weekdays and $30 on weekends.

Right now, Lane and Broderick have only committed to staying in the show until April. A "Producers" spokesman said there were "no plans" to extend the duo's run, but "I can't say that won't happen." The spokesman would not comment on rumors that they would appear in a London production. Lane wisecracked about living up to their first press clippings: "They're going to say, 'They're not as good as Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, you know, those guys from the original.' ... You can only go in and, you know, treat it as if we're starting fresh. And have a good time."

Executive producer for the gala is Burroughs alum Kurt Deutsch, president and founder of Sh-K-Boom Records and Zamler's son. Proud mom and aunts attended pre- and post-event parties, rubbing elbows with such Broadway A-listers as Patti Lupone, Matthew Broderick, Bebe Neuwirth, Stanley Tucci and Edie Falco. The event benefitted the Actors' Fund of America.

Dec 13, 2003 from New York Daily News:
It may not be a great period for musical theater, but times couldn't be better for the collectors of musical soundtracks. Never before have so many original cast albums been available on compact disk. Such rarities as Jerry Herman's "The Grand Tour" is back. So is Irving Berlin's "This Is the Army" and Sigmund Romberg's "Up in Central Park" on Decca Broadway.

Speaking of Romberg, Naxos has a marvelous album featuring him conducting his own work. Also making a welcome return, on RCA's excellent new reissue series, is Frank Loesser's dazzling "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," which includes cuts from the Matthew Broderick revival.

Dec 12, 2003 from FOX News:
By Roger Friedman - It's not the longest shoot in history, but it's getting there. "The Stepford Wives," a remake by Frank Oz, is still in production at Kaufman Astoria Studios. The feature started pre-production in March and began shooting in New York and New Canaan, Conn., in June. Now I'm told that the Scott Rudin production is not ready to wrap quite yet. They're scheduled to be at Kaufman "through Christmas." They still have a set built at a studio in Yonkers where more shooting takes place.

One of the stars, Glenn Close, said yesterday that it was the longest she'd ever worked on a film. Her part of it wrapped last Friday. But other members of the cast have been shuttling back and forth for further work, including Christopher Walken, Bette Midler and Matthew Broderick. The only actor who seems to have escaped the nightmarish part of the work is Nicole Kidman, who finished quite a while ago.

Why is "Stepford" taking so long? There have been many reported problems with the cast not getting along, not behaving and not taking direction. Of course director Oz has come in for a lot of blame. Bette Midler is also a prime suspect, although one set insider told me, "Bette's stand-in is even worse than she is. You should hear her scream at people." The same source said that when fresh faces arrived in recent weeks, they were afraid to ask too many questions. There's also said to be quite a lot of trouble among the actresses, especially in the makeup room. "They're working hard to make them look ugly before they get Stepford-ized," said my source. "And none of them wanted to do it."

As for the runaway production: "No one talks about the cost or the time anymore," they said. Another source said: "There are a lot of special effects. They just got creative as they went along." New indications are that the principal production will wrap at Kaufman next week, but more shooting with a second unit is said to be scheduled for "after the holidays." "The Stepford Wives" is set for a June 2004 release.

The Sundance Film Festival, which has awarded such titles as "You Can Count on Me" and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" in recent years, runs from January 15 to 25 in Park City, Utah. Two particular titles leap out as worthy of theatregoers' attention. The first one, "Marie and Bruce," has been discussed in this column before. The adaptation of Wallace Shawn's caustic marriage play stars Matthew Broderick and Julianne Moore, as well as two veterans of the original Off-Broadway production: Bob Balaban and Griffin Dunne. The other one is Jose Rivera's directing debut film, "The Motorcycle Diaries."

Dec 6, 2003 from Indiatimes:
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick auctioned a love letter which formed part of 125 handwritten messages sold at UNICEF's 50 anniversary gala in New York. Broderick's lines go ‘I would never see anything but pleasure in your eyes, love on your lips and happiness in your steps... I could never do without you.'

Nov 22, 2003 from New York Times:
Patricia Broderick, a writer and painter who was the mother of the actor Matthew Broderick, died on Tuesday at her home in Greenwich Village. She was 78. The cause was cancer, her son said.

Raised in Manhattan on the Upper East Side but a devotee of the bohemian Village, Ms. Broderick had a wide range of interests and callings. An artist in her teens, she began writing plays in the 1940's; several were performed in New York and London, sometimes featuring her husband, the actor James Broderick, who died in 1982.

In 1996, her film, "Infinity," a love story based on the life of the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, was released to generally good reviews and was shown at the Toronto Film Festival. The film was a family affair; Matthew Broderick both directed and starred. Ms. Broderick also worked on the script of "Glory," the 1989 Civil War drama, which starred her son as a young commander in charge of an all-black regiment.

Ms. Broderick continued painting and had her work shown in several galleries in New York and across the country, both in solo shows and with the work of her partner of the last six years, the painter John Wesley. In addition to Mr. Wesley and her son, Ms. Broderick is survived by two daughters, the Rev. Janet Broderick Kraft and Martha Broderick; a brother, Richard Biow; and five grandchildren.

Nov 20, 2003 from Playbill:
The 112-performance return of original stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in "The Producers" is virtually sold out, leaving ticketless theatregoers dreaming of the daily standing-room-only lines that will form. A spokesman for the show said there are a limited number of partial- and obstructed-view tickets still available, but for all intents and purposes, the Dec. 30-April 4, 2004, performances are sold out.

Those now hungry to see the show, must look to ticket brokers, scalpers, eBay or the daily standing room lines. Standing room tickets are released 6 PM for evening shows at the St. James Theatre (there are 18 standing room locations there). A gross box office number for the Lane-Broderick return was not released.

Nov 17, 2003 from Yahoo! News:
NEW YORK (AP) - "The Producers" broke its own Broadway box-office record the day tickets went on sale for the limited-run return of Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick to the show. And in half the time. As of midnight, sales on Sunday totaled $3.6 million for a 12-hour period - the highest one-day take in Broadway history, John Barlow, a spokesman for the show, said Monday. The musical also set the previous one-day record for Broadway sales, scoring more than $3 million the day after it opened in April 2001. That figure was for a 24-hour period.

Tickets went on sale at noon Sunday at the St. James Theatre, as well as by telephone and on the Internet. Prices ranged from $30 to $100, though a limited number of tickets for the best seats in the house were available for $480 each. More than 39,000 tickets had been sold by the time the St. James box office closed at 10 p.m., Barlow said. Internet and telephone orders were still being taken after that time. "The Producers" remained Broadway's hottest ticket until Broderick and Lane left in March 2002. Since then, its fortunes have sagged.

Nov 16, 2003 from The Advocate:
NORWALK -- Norwalk Mayor Alex Knopp also saw the "Stepford Wives" actors between scenes -- and during them. Hizzoner got to watch take after take of a scene occurring toward the end of the movie during an Election Day visit to Lockwood-Mathews.

SCENE II: On a movie set, Knopp looks on as cameras film a confrontation between average-looking men and Kidman's character. The Stepford husbands, including one played by actor Matthew Broderick, complain they feel inferior to their statuesque spouses. "Mr. Broderick's complaint was that it makes him feel like Denis Thatcher (the late husband of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher)," Knopp said with a laugh last week.

As for interviews with Kidman, Broderick, et al, about the shoot, fans may have to wait until the stars hit the talk-show circuit in advance of the movie's June release. Paramount undoubtedly hopes the Stepford wives and their husbands are seen by more people in theaters than the few who caught a glimpse of them in Norwalk.

Nov 14, 2003 from The Advocate:
NORWALK -- The husbands and wives of Stepford bid Fairfield County adieu Wednesday as "The Stepford Wives" wrapped up filming at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum. The trucks and vans that had taken over Mathews Park for the past few weeks were packed up. Some additional filming with stars Nicole Kidman and Matthew Broderick will be done at Paramount Pictures' studio in New York City, said Marsha Robertson, a spokeswoman for Paramount.

Nov 11, 2003 from The Mirror:
Sarah Jessica Parker, 38 - whose son James is now one - revealed her own life is a world away from the columnist she has played for six series. She said: "My life is so radically different from Carrie's. I didn't go to clubs. I didn't want to hang out in bars till three in the morning. I dated about four men in my life." Those four are husband Matthew Broderick, Nicholas Cage, Robert Downey Jr and the late John F Kennedy Jr.

She also revealed it was tough for husband Matthew after James was born. "You have a baby and your world changes," she explained.

from Las Vegas Review-Journal:
Tuning in to TV-to-video transfer, Tony-winner Matthew Broderick marches into the title role in a new adaptation of the Broadway classic "The Music Man" (Buena Vista, $19.99 VHS, $24.99 DVD). Fellow Tony-winners Kristin Chenowith (as Marian the Librarian) and Victor Garber (as River City's mayor) round out the starring cast.

Nov 5, 2003 from Yahoo! News:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - "The Producers" is bringing back its "A" team -- the Broadway musical announced on Wednesday that original stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick would do an encore run starting on Dec. 30. Lane and Broderick return to the Mel Brooks show for 112 performances through April 4. The show's producers would not comment on the deal bringing Lane and Broderick back. The New York Times reported that the pair had been offered a record $100,000 a week each to return.

In the old days, they used to fix Broadway shows out of town. Nowadays, they do it at Angus McIndoe's. All week long, the creative team responsible for "Taboo" has been huddling round a big corner table in the theater-district haunt, hashing out the problems of the $10 million musical.

They're deep in the trenches right now, which accounts for why they were at McIndoe's until 3 a.m. after Monday night's invited dress rehearsal; until 2:30 a.m. after Tuesday's first preview; and until the sun came up after Wednesday night's show. Aug 26, 2003 from Playbill:
"The Producers" will get its London premiere at the Theater Royal, Drury Lane, Variety reported, but will not feature the talents of original Bialystock and Bloom Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

It has been long expected that Lane and Broderick would reprise their roles once the show arrived in London. Recently, however, the pair made it clear that they would recreate their roles on Broadway, not in London; the duo are all but signed to return to the St. James Theatre in New York City for a three-month stint beginning Dec. 31.

Aug 25, 2003 from New York Post:
Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick aren't coasting when it comes to their return to "The Producers". The red-hot team was spotted at Robert's in Water Mill, having a three-hour meal with Mel Brooks, the comedy madman who created Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, and his wife, Anne Bancroft, who still sports that sultry Mrs. Robinson look.

Aug 20, 2003 from Playbill:
A spokesman for "The Producers" told Playbill On-Line that the cost to see the show's original stars would be $100 a head-the same as it is now. Lane, who plays the schlock showman Max Bialystock, revealed that he and Broderick want to help ring in 2004 onstage. "We've been talking about it, and I'm certain that it will happen," Lane told The Post. "And I had nothing to do on New Year's Eve anyway."

Aug 10, 2003 from IMDb:
Sarah Jessica Parker has admitted actor husband Matthew Broderick would happily take on a cameo role in her show "Sex And The City" - but only if he can play a janitor. The actor, who shot to fame with "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," may be disappointed though - his fashion conscious wife doesn't think the show's producer, Michael Patrick King, will allow it. Sarah explains, "I think it would be really nice for (Matthew) to play a part before it's all over. But he says the only part he wants to play is a janitor. In fact, he's been asking for four years to play a janitor! But Michael Patrick won't let him."

Aug 6, 2003 from New York Times:

from Reuters:
Mandeville Films is completing postproduction on "Raising Helen," starring Kate Hudson, and "Providence," starring Matthew Broderick and Alec Baldwin, and is shooting "Walking Tall" with the Rock and Johnny Knoxville.

from Reuters:
By Jonathan Van Meter - When I ask Sarah Jessica Parker what she did today, she says, "No baby-sitters. I woke up with the boy, fed him breakfast, played with him, took him for a walk, went to the park, put him on the swings. Then we came home. And then I took him to get his passport photo and to get a new toy, and then we went to the market, and then I came home and the baby-sitter came and I jumped in the shower and played with him and then put him to bed and then came here." The boy, of course, is James, her son with husband Matthew Broderick, and she seems rightfully proud of the fact that, despite the extraordinary demands on her time, she is a hands-on mother.

To the Fresh Air Fund benefit and the Tonys, Parker wore such radically different dresses—a demure chocolate-brown silk tulle Vera Wang to the former, a black, S&M-tinged, see-through Gucci number to the latter—that I am compelled to ask her how she makes her choices. "I thought the Vera Wang was appropriate," she says. "The occasion seemed to call for some sort of discretion, some sort of modesty. And then for the Tonys, I was shown this Gucci dress, and I'm actually not, generally, someone who suits a Gucci dress. I feel like I'm not up to it. Gucci is a dress for those with confidence and?umm?you know, little breasts. Gucci dresses aren't made for a nursing mother. But that dress is so spectacular, and I knew those glass beads would be supremely sparkly on television. The minute I saw it I thought, Well, this is a crowd pleaser. I never dress like that, and I was with my husband, and it sort of seemed like a show opener." (At the last minute, Broderick wisely decided against making a crack onstage about the couple's "pleasure dungeon.")

I had thought that Broderick—who strikes me as a quieter, more private person—might be feeling a bit bothered by the tsunami that Parker has unleashed in his life, but Parker says it doesn't quite work that way. "It's weird because I think of myself as a rather private person. I have a much stronger reaction to things that I feel invade my privacy than Matthew does; he's more philosophical. It's just that my particular job at this time—this very colorful, bright-lights kind of job—forces the floodlights in a different way. And I think that's one of the things that we struggle with together and feel the same about—this intense lack of privacy. He just has the opportunity to be more private than I do right now. While I felt really put upon by the paparazzi prior to the birth of the baby and even up to now, he felt like we had just found ourselves in sort of a vulgar situation. But he's often the one who's talking me down and being much more calm."

At the heart of Parker's legendary niceness seems to be that she and Broderick see themselves as just folks. "Matthew's a very admirable person because he's exceptionally bright and his first perspective is civilian, but it's colored by the fact that he's now been an actor with a public persona for a really long time. He has an understanding of what comes along with it. I think of Matthew and myself as journeymen. Neither of us ever expected that we would have the kind of success where people would pay attention and know our names."

Is Sarah Jessica Parker planning to launch "Sex and the Hamptons?" The perky blonde star and hubby, Matthew Broderick, have just shelled out $2 million for a home on exclusive Butter Lane in Bridgehampton.

That's raised the eyebrows of Hamptons celeb watchers who wonder what an A-list Hollywood couple are doing buying a spread north of the highway. One real-estate broker explains: "Yes, it is north of the highway, but at least it's south of the tracks!"

Matthew Broderick doesn't scream for ice cream - he whines. Broderick was strolling along West 4th Street after dinner with his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, and two pals Tuesday when the urge for a sweet treat hit, reports The Post's Bill Hoffmann. "Can we go get a Tasti D-Lite?" Broderick asked the "Sex and the City" star. When she didn't answer, he repeated the question twice more, sounding more desperate by the minute. "All right!" Parker finally said, like a mom scolding her misbehaving kid.

NEW YORK (AP) - Broadway remembered Al Hirschfeld as the man who made the stage and its performers come alive in graceful pen-and-ink drawings - and then it named a theater after him. From Arthur Miller to Carol Channing to Whoopi Goldberg to Nathan Lane, they spoke and sang the praises of the show-biz caricaturist during a joyous ceremony Monday in which the Martin Beck Theatre, a venerable Broadway playhouse, was rechristened the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

The participants in Monday's memorial service spanned generations - from 92-year-old Kitty Carlisle Hart to Channing and Barbara Cook to Audra McDonald and Matthew Broderick.

Jun 19, 2003 from FOXNews.com:
Last night's premiere for the final season of "Sex and the City" - which is after all a TV series - was like an event for a new movie. A really great movie. As for "Sex and the City," the principals - Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon - are sad, but ready to move on once the season is completed. They are working on episodes seven and eight of 20, but Parker told me last night, "The two you've seen I think are the least good ones of the season. There are better ones coming."

"That's what she always says," laughed her husband, Matthew Broderick, who I must report has gone gray. I mean, for real. Imagine this headline: Ferris Bueller Goes Gray. "I'm 41!" Broderick said when I joked with him about this. He can't be a teenager anymore. "He still has a baby face," Parker interjected. Broderick's next role is as Nicole Kidman's husband in the remake of "The Stepford Wives." Parker is set on what she'll do next - return to her movie career, and fast - before she gets any older. She and Broderick may do something together, although "there are no plans yet," she cautioned.

Jun 9, 2003 from Backstage.com:
During their Tony Awards presenter stint, Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker joked that they were "geeks" for loving musicals and that those watching should embrace their inner geeks (bravo to playwright Jonathan Tolins and the rest of the Tony writing staff for coming up with that one). Theatre has become the province of the "geek." In high school, you're labeled one (or worse) if you're a tad too enthusiastic about the drama club. So the Tonys have become a celebration of American culture's odd, talented ducks (gays, hip-hop poets, opera lovers, overweight leading ladies and the various adorable cast-offs of "Hairspray"). By putting together a fun, different and inclusive awards show, it looks like the producers of the Tonys are embracing their own inner geeks and not letting low ratings worry them.

from New York Post:
It was sobs in the city for horse racing fan Sarah Jessica Parker - just one in a herd of celebrities who turned up for Funny Cide's failed Triple Crown bid yesterday. The sultry "Sex and the City" star and hubby Matthew Broderick sat stunned and speechless in the covered box seats at rain-soaked Belmont Park after the hometown hero horse could only muster a third-place finish. "We're not doing interviews," huffed the party-pooped Parker, who was wiping tears from her eyes as she was visibly shaken by the outcome.

They may have been silent, but a chorus of Bronx cheers erupted around them when Empire Maker entered the winner's circle, a patch of muddy track that most spectators had reserved in their hearts for Funny Cide. The unhappy couple were joined in the not-so-cheap seats by A-listers Goldie Hawn, Sigourney Weaver, Steven Spielberg and wife Kate Capshaw, socialite Marylou Whitney, known as the first lady of New York horse racing, and "Sopranos" cast members Michael Imperioli, Steve Schirripa and John Ventimiglia.

Matthew Broderick was bugging Democratic National Committee boss Terry McAuliffe at yesterday's soggy Belmont Stakes. McAuliffe tried to place a bet in the final minutes before a race, only to find Broderick, who came with his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, standing at the window, finishing his own wager. "Just as I got to the window, it closed," McAuliffe told us. He might have been annoyed at the time, but it turned out for the best. A friend of the DNC moneyman made the same bet and "lost big time," McAuliffe laughed.

Jun 3, 2003 from Variety:
"It's down to dotting the 'I's' and crossing the 'T's," said Universal's Stacey Snider about bringing the musicalized B'way production of Mel Brooks' "The Producers" to the screen -- where it all started. "We're planning on it," she said "and with the same creative team." That means Brooks, his co-writer Thomas Meehan and director Susan Stroman. And the original co-stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. No deals have as yet been made, but she enthused, "We want to make it a film event the way he made it a Broadway event." She discussed "opening it up" as most films do with a legit show. However, some of the theatricality of the play can't transpose -- such as the opening of the second act when partners Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom find their battered office transformed into gleaming white by their new secretary Ulla, who admits she did it "in the intermission" to a giant laugh. Stacey met Mel for the first time at the Grill for lunch. She was immediately won over by his relationship with everyone in the room--including the waiters. "He's an original," she admitted. Mel explained to me how "The Producers'" original film rights evolved to Universal: from Embassy to Dino De Laurenttis to Jerry Weintraub to EMI, to Vivendi and Canal Plus -- thus Universal. With the L.A. company at work until January, he adds three-month stands in Boston and Chicago plus a touring national company. And, of course, there's still New York. "I'm enjoying a wonderful third act of my life," Brooks admits. As for the next B'way musicalized outing, he and Meehan still have not yet decided between "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles"

The folks at HBO will be broadcasting "The Kid Stays in the Picture," the documentary about the bad boy producer Robert Evans,, next week. As this is not exactly original programming, they had a screening and party last week, bringing the always-entertaining Mr. Evans to town from his home in Los Angeles, and setting up an HBO staff member beside a poster of the movie to interview guests. Matthew Broderick, who looked very smart in a light brown suit and pink tie, was one of the first to arrive - though he lost a few style points when he knocked over the poster. At dinner we saw Mr. Broderick, Candace Bushnell, Dominick Dunne, Nikki Haskell, Joan Rivers, Marina Rust, etc.

"The Lion King 1 1/2," due in early spring 2004, will offer an 'irreverent, edgy, humorous back story' to the original told from the perspectives of characters Timon and Pumba, who are again voiced by Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella, respectively. Matthew Broderick will reprise his role as Simba, while Elton John and Tim Rice -- who won the best song Oscar for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from "The Lion King" -- return with the new song "Meerkat Rhapsody."

May 6, 2003 from New York Times:
Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick walked the red carpet together at the opening night of "Gypsy." We know Mr. Lane was never shy, but it seems to us he and Mr. Broderick may have internalized their roles in "The Producers." Or maybe externalized them. Mr. Lane, for the television cameras, was ebullient; Mr. Broderick, who is, after all, a new father, somewhat somnolent.

"We're like the Lunts now," Mr. Lane was saying. "They want to see us again. 'The Producers,' somewhere, sometime." Where? "I don't know," Mr. Lane said. "Maybe in London."

"Maybe here," Mr. Broderick said, finishing the thought. They walked on.

HOLLYWOOD - Siblings John and Joan Cusack have dropped out of Frank Oz's "The Stepford Wives" for Paramount Pictures. A remake of Bryan Forbes' 1975 thriller starring Katherine Ross and based on Ira Levin's bestselling novel, the film centers on a woman (Nicole Kidman) who moves into a neighborhood where husbands have transformed their wives into robots designed to cater to them.

Matthew Broderick is in talks to replace John Cusack as Kidman's husband, while Bette Midler has already signed up to play Joan's role, that of Bobbie Markowitz, a sarcastic, cranky woman gets transformed into a robot. The Cusacks exited the project because they need to attend to an undisclosed personal matter, reports Variety. Production on "The Stepford Wives" is set to begin this June.

Apr 29, 2003 from Coming Soon!:
Production Weekly reports that Julianne Moore and Matthew Broderick are set to star in the indie feature "Marie and Bruce," based on a play by Wallace Shawn. Tom Cairns will direct the project early next month in New York.

In the film, the comically neurotic New York couple is trapped in a decidedly sadomasochistic relationship. When Marie decides to leave Bruce, she delivers herself of a torrent of ferocious humor and foul-mouthed vituperation concerning him and their marriage, not to mention love, hate, caring, commitment, and all the other current cliches about relationships.

Alec Baldwin and Matthew Broderick are in town shooting a movie with the working title of "Providence," based on an actual FBI sting that staged a fake movie shoot here in the 1980s to investigate mob infiltration of the movie industry.

Shooting began Sunday at Riverwalk, moved to Dorrance Street yesterday and heads tomorrow to the Statehouse steps, then to Prospect Park before wrapping up Friday. When the film is released in early 2004, it won't be called "Providence" anymore. Bowing to the popularity of the NBC TV show "Providence," filmmakers will change its name to avoid confusing the two in moviegoers' minds. No word yet on what the title will be.

from Turnto10.com:
PROVIDENCE -- Directors of the film "Providence" say they'll be filming in and around downtown Providence through the end of the week. Several streets were blocked off Tuesday for filming, prompting some to complain of snarled traffic and fewer parking places. Publicist Michael Umble said the crew tentatively plans to shoot at the State House Wednesday from 6:30 a.m. until noon, depending on the weather.

Another associate connected to the film said he doesn't think roads will be closed if the crew shoots on Smith Hill. But there could be parking bans on some streets surrounding the State House. The film is a crime-comedy starring Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin and Calista Flockhart. Broderick plays a movie director and screenwriter who finds a man to finance his latest project but soon discovers the producer is really an undercover FBI agent working on a mob sting operation. The movie is not related to the canceled NBC television series of the same name.

Mar 12, 2003 from Yahoo! News:
LOS ANGELES (AP) - As "Sex in the City" starts filming its sixth and final season later this month, Matthew Broderick finds himself among the masses of people not looking forward to its end. Broderick said his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, and head writer Michael Patrick King feel they have said all that they have to say and it is time to move on.

"I always think that maybe they will at the last minute, but I guess that's not true," Broderick told AP Radio. The change of pace might be a good thing for Broderick and his wife since the couple had their first baby this past November. Broderick said that when the show was filming previous seasons the cast would often work 16-hour days and get no sleep. "I've never seen anything like it," he said. "I don't know how they all survive."

AP - Providence is playing host to a major movie production next month. The capital city will welcome Matthew Broderick and Alec Baldwin for a week of shooting scenes for the comedy "Providence." Today's Providence Journal reports the Touchstone film is already in production in Los Angeles. The movie is about a phony movie shoot set up by the F-B-I to snare mobsters who have infiltrated film-industry unions.

Broderick plays a novice writer-director. Baldwin is the gumshoe who poses as a movie producer. Also appearing: Calista Flockhart and Toni Collette, though they're NOT expected to be in Providence. The script was written by Jeff Nathanson, who wrote "Catch Me If You Can." He'll be making his feature film directing debut with Providence.

from IMDb.com:
Matthew Broderick and his wife Sarah Jessica Parker managed to silence the paparazzi when they left hospital with their newborn son - by threatening to leave if they woke the baby. The couple's baby, James Wilke, arrived into the world at New York's Lennox Hill Hospital on October 28. And when the proud first-time parents left the hospital and were greeted by hordes of photographers, they calmly hushed the screaming media members, fearing their offspring would wake up. Broderick recalls, "We said, 'If everybody makes noise, we're gonna get in the car, so be nice and quiet.' And they listened!"

Feb 10, 2003 from Yahoo! News:
AP - Matthew Broderick remembers singing with "The Music Man" album when he was a kid. However, it was his father who used to get carried away with the musical. "My father had the record on a lot," Broderick told reporters. "He used to sing it more than me. I think he wanted to play that part (Professor Harold Hill) so badly that when I got the chance I was like, 'Yeah, I better do that.' Because I forgot that it was him, actually, not me who wanted that so badly."

Like most people, Broderick thinks Robert Preston was perfect for "The Music Man," but he isn't worried about eclipsing what is already a high bar. "Robert Preston is totally spectacular," Broderick said. "It's one of those things where the guy and the part just met perfectly. It's hopeless to even think about that too much. I just tried to approach it from scratch and think about a man coming into a town, doing his usual routine and then he gets his foot caught in the door."

In the musical, Hill cons the parents into buying his expensive instruments and uniforms, convincing them that his revolutionary music training program, "The Think System," will turn their youngsters into virtuoso performers. Broderick said he's too nice a guy to con anyone that way. "I've only perpetuated him on TV I believe, and in movies," Broderick said. "I don't get conned very often, I don't think. I've been tricked in pool halls. And somebody says, 'Yeah, I bet I can make this shot.' Which you should always say, 'I'm sure you can' by the way, everyone."

Matthew will also be on "Good Morning America" and "Late Show with David Letterman" Feb 10 and "Live with Regis and Kelly" on Feb 11.

from New York Post:
Broderick talks about his James bond: "Access Hollywood's" Pat O'Brien sat down with Matthew Broderick last night (7:30 p.m./Ch. 4) - and their conversation eventually turned to how Broderick and wife Sarah Jessica Parker staged their media-saturated exit from the hospital last October with their newborn baby, James.

"There was no hiding him so we thought it was best to do it in a controlled way where everyone could get the picture at once - so there wasn't one person in a frenzied way trying to steal something," said Broderick. "We thought the safest thing was to tell everyone when we were coming out and tell everybody to please not yell, and let them get the picture and then they kind of went away." Broderick also had this to say about fatherhood: "It's not what I thought it would be, but it's the greatest thing ever."

from USA Today:
LOS ANGELES - You can think of Matthew Broderick as "The Music Dad." The popular, Tony-winning star steps into the role of Harold Hill for ABC's The Music Man, which airs as a Wonderful World of Disney presentation on Feb. 16.

At the time he filmed the musical, his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, was pregnant with their son. Broderick says it probably influenced the way he played Harold, particularly in his scenes with the show's little boy.

"I certainly was thinking about what it would be like to have a son or a daughter, and that's in a way appropriate for Harold, because he doesn't have any children, either, not that he knows about. But at the same time, he's at a stage in his life where, whether he likes it or not, he wants to take care of a youngster and settle down. I knew that that was coming my way, and I probably did draw on that."

The Music Man, of course, was filmed before with the show's original Broadway star, Robert Preston. Following a legendary performance can give an actor pause, but Broderick says it didn't stop him from wanting to do the role. "He (Preston) is the music man. But it's such good material, it's worth doing it again."

Why do it now? Producer Craig Zadan, who, with partner Neil Meron, was responsible for such TV musicals as Gypsy, Cinderella, Annie and the current big-screen hit Chicago, says the time just felt right. "We thought The Music Man was something that people would be very much in the mood for in the country right now, with its Americana and its emotion and its family values."

Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth star as Harold Hill and Marian Paroo in ABC's television production of "Meredith Willson's The Music Man."

The Music Man recently enjoyed a successful Broadway revival in 2000-2001. Jan 2, 2003 from Dark Horizons:
Producer Walter Parkes recently talked with Screenwriting magazine about "Catch Me If You Can" and was asked whether he would write anything ever again. He's only ever penned two scripts - "WarGames" & "Sneakers" which became excellent films, and surprisingly enough Parkes seems keen on following up on one of them: "I'm actually writing a follow-up to WarGames. The idea's actually been floating around up there - in my head - for years, but it's just been finding time to sit down and write it. Anyway, we're doing that right now. I'd like to keep most of it secret for the moment but it'd definiely deal with the information age explosion we've been dealt in years to come. We're hoping Matthew (Broderick) and Ally (Sheedy) will come back to play David and Jennifer. We'd love John (Badham) to direct of course. War Games 2 will take us up to about 2004. I'll be producing another of Hanks films then. But early days on that".
