There was plenty of star power present at Rosie O'Donnell's second annual White Rose Awards gala on Tuesday night at the Marriott Marquis, and one table of celebs was particularly glittery. Seated side by side-two of NYC's premiere couples, Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathie Lee Gifford and her Frank. Matthew and Sarah, though quite a bit past the honeymoon phase, seem an exceptionally connected pair, very amusing and very amused-by each other and by their own stellar status. They look as if they have a lot of fun.

Sep 1, 1999 from L.A. Daily News:
Sarah Jessica Parker hits high notes in her personal and professional lives: It's a season of extremes for Sarah Jessica Parker. The summer has been filled with both good news and bad for the petite, versatile actress, but as she'll be the first to admit, variety is the catalyst for creativity.

First, the good news. "Sex and the City," the uncensored HBO comedy series on which she stars and serves as executive consultant, has earned two Emmy Award nominations -- for outstanding comedy series and for Parker's own lead performance. Her actor-husband Matthew Broderick is also having a great year with the kiddie hit "Inspector Gadget" and the critically acclaimed "Election," as well as the successful New York stage run of "Night Must Fall" to his credit.

Aug 30, 1999 from Entertainment Weekly:
In Hollywood, any couple that lasts long enough to get a script into development eventually gets lured into taking the lovebird antics on screen. But not Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. ''We talk about it all the time, but we haven't found the right thing,'' says Parker. ''It has to be something we feel is great if we're going to blow the wad.''

Speaking of that sort of thing, would she have considered this year's hottest couple collaboration, ''Eyes Wide Shut?'' ''Can you imagine saying no to Stanley Kubrick? I certainly couldn't,'' says Parker. ''But we have not displayed affection that way, and it hasn't been our nature, so it's hard to imagine.'' Parker feels that even a less revealing film than ''Eyes'' might be a mistake for the couple. ''The thing I keep thinking is, do we really want to do this in front of the American public? And sometimes I think maybe we shouldn't, that it's too private, unless we're in a film where we're not playing opposite each other.''

As for Broderick, he may want to nix an on-screen pairing for entirely different reasons. According to his 34-year-old bride, it won't be easy for any actor to follow in the footsteps of her ''Sex in the City'' costar Chris Noth, who plays the dashing Mr. Big opposite her New York City sex columnist character, Carrie. ''He's ruined me for other men on the show in a lot of ways,'' says Parker. ''He's a big, grown-up man, not a boy. He's not pretty, he's kind of messy. He's vulgar occasionally, and he's a really good actor. There's a feminine quality about a lot of actors, where they're not men first, they're actors first, and vain. But Chris Noth is just a guy. I simply love him.'' Still, Broderick has no worries about measuring up to Mr. Big in real life. ''Matthew's very secure,'' says Parker. ''As he should be."

Aug 22, 1999 from Box Office Guru:
Disney's "Inspector Gadget" slipped only 29% to eighth with $4.3M bringing its better-than-expected total to $83.2M.

With the unbelievable success of The Sixth Sense, Buena Vista over the weekend has managed to power itself to the market share lead among studios with year-to-date ticket sales totalling $700M. That is quite a surprising feat considering Fox has reigned supreme for months with the $417M+ gross of George Lucas' Star Wars Episode I. Helping the Mouse House in its run to the top were Tarzan, Inspector Gadget and solid holdover grosses from last winter's holiday titles. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. (powered by The Matrix, Analyze This, and Wild Wild West) looks to claim second place after this weekend with roughly $680M in grosses in 1999. Fox will slip to third with about $675M thus far. Expect the Buena Vista lead to widen in the weeks ahead as The Sixth Sense continues its sizzling run while most new films are not expected to provide much heat.

Aug 18, 1999 from New York Post:
Matthew Broderick was in rare form Tuesday night at Jorge Posada's 28th birthday party at China Club. Broderick and wife Sarah Jessica Parker had been invited by Derek Jeter, who became buds with the "Sex and the City" star after the two met at the last Espy awards. "I've become Derek's counsel," Parker told Page Six's Ian Spiegelman. "I'm his older ear." When "Sopranos" star Vincent Pastore spotted Parker, he introduced himself, but Broderick quickly jumped in demanding to see Pastore's VIP room bracelet. "How do I know you can be in here?" asked Broderick. "You could be anyone!" The hulking Pastore responded by grabbing Broderick around the neck and kissing him repeatedly. Since the fizzle of his last project, "Inspector Gadget," Broderick said, he's been taking some time off to read  scripts. "I will work again ... someday," he vowed. "You will?" said Parker. With time on his hands, Broderick is looking forward to seeing Bruce Willis in the movie of Kurt Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions." "I haven't read that book since I was like 15," he said wistfully. After a brief discussion of the novel, Broderick amended his statement: "You know what? I have never read that book. It doesn't sound familiar at all." As Page Six departed, Parker leaned in and advised: "Don't stoop too low."

Aug 2, 1999 from Box Office Guru:
Disney's "Inspector Gadget" fell a reasonable 35% to $14.1M in its sophomore frame to take fifth place. Starring Matthew Broderick as the live-action version of the popular cartoon character, the family comedy has nabbed an impressive $47.9M in only ten days and could be headed for $90-100M. Between "Inspector Gadget" and "Tarzan," Disney has cornered the family film market this summer and should enjoy $250-275M worth of ticket sales between its two kidpics. Last summer, the Mouse House took in $187M for its animated/live-action duo of "Mulan" and "The Parent Trap."

Jul 25, 1999 from Box Office Guru:
Disney's "Inspector Gadget" was able to secure a superb opening capturing an estimated $22,000,000 over the Friday-to-Sunday period (July 23-25). Fighting crime in 2,814 theaters, the live-action remake of the 1980s cartoon series averaged a stellar $7,829 per precinct. Starring Matthew Broderick, Inspector Gadget performed better than Disney's last two July live-action remakes - 1997's George of the Jungle and last year's The Parent Trap - which had Friday-to-Sunday debuts of $16.1M and $11.1M respectively and the film's also 11th biggest openings of 1999.  According to Buena Vista distribution chief Chuck Viane, Inspector Gadget is reaching a broad audience as moviegoers between the ages of 12 and 17 accounted for 15% of the opening weekend audience while evening showings are attracting huge crowds.

from New York Times:
The most popular volume in the car library is "D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths," a four-tape set on which Paul Newman, Kathleen Turner, Sidney Poitier and Matthew Broderick take turns reading vivid episodes from Olympus. You can listen to those voices forever, which is how long it can take to go the length of the L.I.E. on a Sunday night. If your young listeners are impressionable, you may have some explaining to do: Zeus does some major philandering, and Cronus eats his young. Think of it as a conversation starter.

The timetable for the Dodger Endemol Theatrical Productions revival of Meredith Willson's "The Music Man" is for early 2000, with rehearsals beginning in December. It was previously mentioned as a fall 1999 possibility.

Any production of "The Music Man" -- about a slick, corrupt traveling salesman won over by Marian the Librarian in Rover City, IA -- hinges on a titular star. The names Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and Matthew Broderick were mentioned in the press for the role of Prof. Harold Hill, but no cast is announced.

Apr 15, 1999 from Playbill:
Last month, Hartford Stage lost its original star of "The Death of Papa", Matthew Broderick, when the actor opted to remain with the National Actors Theatre's Broadway staging of Emlyn Williams' "Night Must Fall." Rather than scrap the production, artistic director Michael Wilson decided to proceed, recasting Broderick's role with Andrew McCarthy. McCarthy only just completed a run as James Tyrone, Jr., in Hartford's revival of O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night. He is best known, however, for his many roles in "Brat Pack" films such as "Pretty in Pink" and "St. Elmo's Fire."

Apr 14, 1999 from Mr. Showbiz:
"Election" will be released on this April 23.
Nearly fifteen years after taking a day off, Ferris Bueller is finally going back to high school … only this time, he's on the faculty! Matthew Broderick plays Jim McAllister, a popular teacher and the student government adviser at George Washington Carver High. Jim enjoys helping his students mature and thinks he has a pretty good life — right up to the moment he tangles with Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon), a determined Little Miss Extracurricular gunning for the student body presidency. Cool, intimidating Tracy runs unopposed until a peeved Jim convinces a popular, dim-bulb football player (Chris Klein) to jump into the mix, seriously upsetting her plans. This means war! Director Alexander Payne demonstrated a deft touch for dark comedy with Citizen Ruth, and Election has been quietly building some seriously killer buzz ever since last fall, when it was originally slated for an October release.

Apr 8, 1999 from Playbill:
It sounded too good to be true. "Night Must Fall," the Broadway chiller starring Matthew Broderick, was to move from the Lyceum Theatre to the Helen Hayes Theatre in just two days, ending at the former April 11 and reopening at the latter April 13.

Like the psycho lead character who cons an old lady into thinking he's a sweetheart, the news was too good to be true. According to the Springer/Chicoine press office, Night Must Fall will take another week to load in its scenery and do some "tweaking," pushing the reopening night to Tuesday, April 20.

The move of "Night Must Fall" came as something of a surprise to the theatre community, for -- though the revival of the Emlyn Williams thriller garnered a positive notice from the Times -- it was always understood that the show would end on schedule, due to Broderick's commitment to appear in "The Death of Papa," a new Horton Foote play premiering at CT's Hartford Stage, May 27. A spokesperson for the National Actors Theatre said Broderick had given up that play to stay with "Night Must Fall."

Emlyn Williams' potboiler tells of a psychopathic bellboy and the spell he casts on several women in an English country house. The show began previews on Feb. 2 and opened March 8 at the Lyceum, with a cast of Broderick, J. Smith-Cameron, Judy Parfitt, Michael Countryman, Seana Kofoed, Patricia Kilgarriff and Peter McRobbie. John Tillinger (The Exact Center of the Universe) directs.

Stars from Broadway, movies, TV and cabaret will gather Sat., March 20, for a 12-hour free music marathon, saluting composer Frank Loesser. Highlights, celebrating the composer of such classics as "Guys and Dolls" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," include a trio of Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick and Vickie Clark; Betty Comden and Adolph Green singing "Baby, It's Cold Outside," and the cast of "Titanic" pleading "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat." Entitled "Wall to Wall Frank Loesser," the event is Symphony Space's 29th musical gift to New York, and takes place at the Space's facility, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street. Information: (212) 864-1414, Ext. 403 or the website at www.symphonyspace.org.

Mar 12, 1999 from Mr Showbiz:
Actor Matthew Broderick is no stranger to Broadway, and he's done a bit of nudity in the course of his movie career. But don't expect him to combine the two for an upcoming stage production of "Night Must Fall."

According to a report in USA Today, the buns on display in the first few moments of the new show, which opens Monday, belong to assistant stage manager David Dartley. The '80s teen icon reportedly wasn't asked to perform the scenes himself, but told the paper he wouldn't mind appearing nude in the right circumstances.

Fans who caught Alan Parker's 1994 period comedy "The Road to Wellville," in which Broderick starred alongside Anthony Hopkins and Bridget Fonda, were treated to a few glimpses of their hero in the buff. And, going a little bit further back, Broderick was briefly shirtless in 1985's "Ladyhawke."

"Night Must Fall," which opens Monday, is a Depression-era period thriller. Broderick is a three-time Tony nominee, and has twice won the prestigious theater award, for his performances in "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."

It's probably safe to assume nudity won't be an issue in either of Broderick's next two movies: He plays a history teacher who schemes against a popular student in Paramount's "Election," and he'll reincarnate a popular '80s cartoon character in the Disney-produced live-action remake of "Inspector Gadget."

Mar 5, 1999 from Playbill:
Matthew Broderick, J. Smith-Cameron and Judy Parfitt finally step out of the shadows of Broadway previews March 8, when the National Actors Theatre staging of "Night Must Fall" opens at the Lyceum Theatre. The limited run continues to April 18. Previews began Feb. 2.

The 1935 Emlyn Williams thriller is directed by John Tillinger (Broadway's Getting and Spending and The Sunshine Boys) on a set by James Noone in tones of black, white and gray. The visual experience is akin to an eerie, black-and-white movie, according to insiders. Lighting is by Brian MacDevitt.

The Feb. 16 announcement of recasting, a matter of "creative differences" (according to a production spokesperson), bumped the official opening of the revival to March 8 rather than the  previously announced Feb. 21.

National Actors Theatre general manager Fred Walker previously told Playbill that no matter how positive potential reviews are, there can be no significant extension with Broderick in the role because of the actor's commitment to appear in Horton Foote's The Death of Papa May 27-June 27 at the Hartford Stage in Connecticut.

Matthew's 1997 play, "The Death of Papa" has returned at Hartford Stage on May 27-June 27, 1999. Check out for more info at www.artsafterdark.com/stage.html

from Boxoffice Online:
Ryan Phillippe's favorite Columbia film, though, is 'Glory' (1989). "I loved that movie," he says. "I've probably seen it eight times. Matthew Broderick's performance was so underrated. I think it's beautiful. That scene around the campfire when they're about to go to war, and Denzel says they're the only family he ever had'it consistently makes me cry. Or at least get teary-eyed."
