Matthew Broderick: From Here To Infinity
Interviews

July 29, 2004

THE FAIRER SEX?

By GQ

As a teen he was idolised as Ferris Bueller. In his latest movie, he gets to mould Nicole Kidman into the ideal wife - but, in a chat with GQ.COM, Matthew Broderick admits that he's always been bullied by women and he owns as many shoes as Sarah Jessica Parker...

GQ: While filming The Stepford Wives, did you think about why this guy who has a dream marriage would want to change his wife?
MB: Everybody has that side to their personality. Or at least I do, on some level. There's a little evil side in me that thinks a remote-controlled lady that would bring me Martinis in a nightie would be good.

GQ: Why do you think we have this crazy notion that women are the weaker sex?
MB: I never had that notion. I had a very strong mom. I had two sisters who beat the hell out of me pretty much everyday. They were wonderful to me, in case they're listening. But, you know, I got the odd belt.

GQ: One of the most telling scenes in the film is when it becomes clear that men are actually worried about women being better than them. How do you view the competition between men and women?
MB: It doesn't have to be viewed as a competition. But there is a part of most men that is intimidated by a woman who makes a lot of money. I like it. Anytime my wife makes money, I think that's good because I hope I'll get my little share. But at dinner I like to pay the cheque. I have some of those traditional attitudes.

GQ: What qualities make for the perfect lady?
MB: It depends who you are. One guy's cheddar is another man's blue. I know what I've liked. But I don't know what makes the perfect woman. I don’t think that any of them are perfect, and I don't think you would actually like it if they were. I think it's nice to be challenged, and surprised. Even on the most superficial level a lot of great beauties talk about their mole, or the thing that isn't perfect. But that's part of what makes you all the more desperate to have them.

GQ: What quality would your wife most want you to lose?
MB: There's probably a list. She doesn't like it when I put stuff off. I don't always unpack in time. I don't make decisions quickly enough for her. We're different that way. She's very like an executive who can quickly decide what to do and move forward, always moving. And I'm, like, hmm, I don't know. Let me think about it. Let me call people and ask what do they think...

GQ: Does she like shoes as much as her character on a certain TV show?
MB: That's her, she loves shoes. Even before that show, I remember when I first got to know her, I asked: 'Are these all your shoes?' Now I have to admit, since we're on a roll of honesty, I have quite a number of shoes. It's infectious. And then you start thinking; well those shoes don't really go with this. So I gotta get those shoes. I'm very embarrassed about that.

GQ: Does your wife ever have a Stepford moment?
MB: She makes cupcakes. But, no, she's not like Joanna [Nicole Kidman's character in the film] at all. And there’s nothing I would change about her. She is extremely successful and mega-powerful - she could destroy this whole hotel just by looking at it. My wife, I meant...
